Earthrise – Spring 2018

April 14, 2018 at 7:30 pm9:30 pm PDT

Taken by astronaut Bill Anders in 1968, Earthrise was the first color photograph taken of our home by a human being. Heralded as “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken,” it is symbolic of how humans need to examine their existence from a global perspective, particularly as it relates to global climate change.

The Portland Gay Symphonic Band is pleased to present “Earthrise.” Selections chosen to celebrate planet Earth, including Smetatana’s “Moldau,” Ticheli’s “Vesuvius,” Copland’s “Outdoor Overture,” amongst others will give the listener the opportunity to see how composers have created musical art in homage to the Earth.
Ally Shuell, senior at Madison High School and winner of our First Annual Young Artist Solo Competition, will be performing “Diversion” by Bernard Heiden. She will be awarded a $500 scholarship at the performance.

We are offering this concert for FREE to the community with a suggested donation between $15 and 40.

Doors at 7:00pm
Performance at 7:30pm
